Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University (NNSPU) was founded in 1911 as Nizhny Novgorod Teachers Institute. In 1918 it was reorganised into Nizhny Novgorod Pedagogical Institute.
In 1987 the Institute was awarded the order of the Red Labour Banner by the USSR Supreme Soviet Act for its achievements in training school teachers. In 1993 The Institute was reorganised into Nizhny Novgorod State Pedagogical University. Today the University is one of the leading higher pedagogical institutions in Russia.
For 80 years the University has trained over 50000 specialists in Education. Among the University graduates there are many outstanding scientists, politicians, diplomats, well-known professors and educators.
Education, astronomy, chemistry, educational psychology, history of Russia, the Russian language, the teaching methods of Russian, philosophy, environmental education, world literature, Russian literature are the leading research directions of the University.
